ASUU STRIKE Latest: “Nigerians should expect our decision on or before Wednesday” – Official

The five-month-old strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be over within the next four days.
This disclosure was made known to DailyPost in Abuja Saturday morning.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Professor Ike Odimegwu, Chairman of ASUU Chapter, Nnamdi Azikwe University, said the union stands by its promise to make public its decision on or before Wednesday, December 18, 2013.
“You know we reached that agreement and signed it 6pm last Wednesday (Dec. 11), he said. “After that, we promised Nigerians that we will communicate our decision within a week.”
“What that means is, there is still ample time to do so until 6pm of next Wednesday. The people should not be agitated. On our part, we are ready to effect our side of the deal so no cause for alarm.”
When asked on the likely decision of the Union leaders, Prof. Odimegwu refused to give a definite answer.
“My dear friend, that I cannot say for now. Don’t forget we are one body. We will invite all of you (journalists) to come and hear our position. Our president (Dr. Isa Fagge) will officially announce the union’s decision.”
“But till then, Nigerians should keep calm and not speculate anything. We all love this country and all we are doing is for the good of the university system,” the official added.
The action which clocks 167 days today, has crippled academic activities on campuses nationwide.
The lecturers had embark on the action in July, following inability of the Federal Government to implement the 2009 pact both parties reached.
Despite threats of sack by the FG and Committee of Vice-Chancellors, ASUU has remained resolute, vowing that no amount of intimidation would deter its over 60, 000 members from seeking a better condition of service and infrastructure of government-owned varsities.

Arsenal defender berates Ozil for not applauding Arsenal fans after Manchester City defeat

A disappointing day for the Gunners was capped off when the former Real Madrid player was told off by his team-mate for not showing his appreciation to the supporters

Per Mertesacker was involved in a bust-up with Mesut Ozil after the midfielder failed to applaud Arsenal's away fans following the club's 6-3 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday.

Instead of acknowledging his side's travelling support, Ozil headed straight for the tunnel but Mertesacker, who had gone over to the away section, argued with his countryman.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger played down the incident between the pair after the match: "That is the Germans, they will sort that out between themselves. Don't worry."
Mesut Ozil as since apologised for his action via his official Facebook account later in the day that he regretted his actions and only behaved in the manner that he did as he was disappointed with the loss.

"Sorry I didn't thank the fans at the end of the game," he wrote.

"You have been brilliant to me and I know you had travelled a long way and spent your money to support us.

"I was upset with the result and know I should have come to you to say 'thank you' and I know it is a big Arsenal tradition win, lose or draw."

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring before Theo Walcott pulled the Gunners level. Alvaro Negredo's goal ensured City went into the break with a lead, while a double from Fernandinho, along with a goal from David Silva and a Yaya Toure penalty secured the win for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

City are now three points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal after 16 games played.

Arsenal's day was made even worse after defender Laurent Koscielny suffered a deep cut to his knee in the first half and needed to be stretchered off.

Sponsorship Of 6 Students In Russia Withdrawn

President Goodluck Jonathan has withdrawn sponsorship for six Niger- Delta students at the Peoples Friendship University in Moscow, Russia. The students are part of the 24-student delegates studying in the university under a special scholarship scheme for Niger Delta youths. The students were found to be part of a group of students that attacked the Nigerian embassy in Moscow, on Monday. And for going on rampage and violently attacking the Nigerian mission, the government says these students breached the code of conduct for delegates on scholarship that they signed before their departure from Nigeria’. He described their action as gross misconduct, which the Nigerian government cannot tolerate. Students Dont Want ASUU Strike To End - ASUU President

The President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Isa Fagge has said it is continuing its nationwide strike on the advice of university students.

Speaking with PUNCH, the President of the union said students were tired of the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the Federal Government’s failure to implement the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.

Fagge said the union had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the
strike until the Federal Government fully implemented the agreement.

“Our students have come out to say they don’t want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don’t want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students,” he said.

On the complaint by the Federal Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement.

“There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don’t they begin with those ones?” he asked.

He added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated.

He said, “Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike.”

The university lecturers who began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and is seeking re-negotiation.

The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who gave government’s position on the strike when he briefed journalists at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money on.
